Definitionskos:definition | OBSTACLE (aka. crag) AND COMET SCOUR refers to the crescentic to elongate scour marks around and extending downstream from an obstacle in the path of flow. Although these may include depositional tails, they occur at relatively high flow velocities (0.4 to >1 m/s) and are principally erosional in origin. Scour length varies from meters to hundreds of meters. Forms transitional to CRAG AND TAIL structures with small-sized obstacles and less well developed SCOUR marks (decimeter scale) occur at the lower end of this velocity spectrum. Erosional SCOUR crescents, irregular pluck marks, and tool marks may all occur without an associated obstacle (Stow et al., 2009). |
