Definitionskos:definition | A U-shaped glacial trough whose floor is occupied by the sea. Typically, fjords are steep-sided, overdeepened rock basins with shallow thresholds at the coast. Their form is characteristic of erosion by ice streams, outlet glaciers or valley glaciers which exploited either pre-existing river valleys or underlying weaknesses in the bedrock (Excerpt from Bell et al. 2016, adapted from Bell et al. 1997.
